By | Impact Stories | No Comments

We are thrilled to announce the official launch of our filter distribution project in the Western province of Rwanda. Starting with Nkombo Island in the Rusizi District. At Spouts International, we believe that access to clean and safe drinking water is a fundamental human right. We are committed to making this a reality for communities in need.

Our Mission

Our mission is clear: to provide households on Nkombo Island with access to clean and safe drinking water through the power of Purifaaya filters. Clean water is essential for good health, and by partnering with local communities, we are working towards a healthier, happier, and more prosperous future for all.

Why Nkombo Island?

World Environment Day 2023: Joining Forces to Beat Plastic Pollution

By | Impact Stories | No Comments

World Environment Day is celebrated on the 5th of June every year, and in 2023, it carries special significance as the world unites to tackle one of the most pressing environmental challenges – plastic pollution.

On this occasion, we, at, teamed up with Uganda Junior Rangers and InfoNile to make a positive impact.

We participated in a clean-up initiative along the shores of Lake Victoria, contributing to the global effort to #BeatPlasticPollution.

What is Beat Plastic Pollution?

“Beat Plastic Pollution” is the theme for World Environment Day 2023, as designated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). It aims to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of plastic pollution on our environment and encourage individuals, communities, and organizations to take action against this menace.

How Can We Beat Plastic Pollution in the Environment?

Beating plastic pollution requires collective efforts and conscious actions. Here are some steps that individuals and communities can take to combat plastic pollution:

  1. Reduce Single-Use Plastics: Minimize the usage of disposable plastic items like bags, straws, and cutlery. Opt for reusable alternatives instead.
  2. Recycle Plastic Waste: Promote and participate in plastic recycling programs to ensure that plastic waste is properly managed and recycled into new products.
  3. Plastic Alternatives: Encourage the use of biodegradable and compostable alternatives to conventional plastic products.
  4. Clean-Up Initiatives: Organize and participate in cleanup drives to remove plastic litter from beaches, rivers, and other natural habitats.
  5. Support Legislation: Advocate for stronger plastic waste management policies and regulations at the local and national levels.
  6. Educate and Raise Awareness: Spread awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution and inspire others to take action.
  7. Innovative Solutions: Support research and development of innovative technologies to address plastic pollution, such as ocean cleanup systems.
  8. Plastic-Free Events: Organize events with minimal or zero plastic usage to set an example for sustainable practices.
  9. Responsible Consumption: Make conscious choices as consumers, favouring products with minimal plastic packaging.
  10. Partnerships and Collaborations: Collaborate with organizations, businesses, and governments to create effective solutions and amplify the impact.

Why Should We Beat Plastic Pollution?

The consequences of plastic pollution are far-reaching and affect both the environment and human health. By beating plastic pollution, we can:

  • Protect Wildlife: Marine animals often mistake plastic debris for food, leading to ingestion and entanglement, which can be fatal.
  • Preserve Ecosystems: Plastic pollution disrupts natural ecosystems and damages delicate habitats, affecting biodiversity and ecological balance.
  • Safeguard Human Health: Microplastics, small plastic particles, can enter the food chain, potentially harming human health.
  • Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Plastic production and incineration contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change.

World Environment Day 2023: Beat Plastic Pollution Highlights

On World Environment Day 2023, Spouts of Water joined forces with Uganda Junior Rangers and InfoNile to clean up the shores of Lake Victoria.

The event aimed to remove plastic waste and raise awareness about the importance of preserving this vital freshwater ecosystem. The collective efforts showcased the power of collaboration and community action in tackling plastic pollution.

Plastic Pollution Facts and Figures

– The world produces approximately 381 million tons of plastic waste annually.
– Only about 9% of plastic waste is recycled, leaving a significant portion to pollute the environment.
– It is estimated that more than 8 million tons of plastic end up in the oceans each year.
– Plastic pollution affects over 600 marine species, with 15% of marine species endangered due to plastic debris.
– Nearly 1 million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every minute globally.

World Environment Day 2023 serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need to address plastic pollution and its detrimental effects on our planet. By joining hands and implementing actionable solutions, we can beat plastic pollution and pave the way for a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world.

Revolutionizing Access to Safe Water: Purifaaya Ceramic Water Filter

In many parts of the world, access to clean and safe drinking water is far from guaranteed. Waterborne diseases and contaminants threaten the health and well-being of countless lives, especially in underserved communities.

However, a remarkable innovation is changing this narrative. Enter the Purifaaya, a  product of SPOUTS of Water, a social enterprise on a mission to bring life-changing environmental and social benefits to African households.

The Purifaaya

Clean water is not a luxury; it’s a fundamental human right. Recognizing this, we developed the Purifaaya, a game-changing solution that stands at the intersection of innovation and impact. Here’s why this innovation is capturing hearts and transforming lives:

  • Pure and Simple Technology

Purifaaya uses ceramic technology to remove impurities and contaminants from water to make it safe to drink. This means that households have access to safe drinking water without the need for fuel (firewood or charcoal) or electricity. The filter is easy to use and maintain, making it accessible even in hard-to-reach areas.

  • Local Creativity, Global Impact

We source local materials to produce the Purifaaya filter, supporting local economies while ensuring a sustainable production process. By utilizing readily available resources, we have not only streamlined our manufacturing but also reduced the carbon footprint associated with production and distribution.

  • A Multi-Level Approach

This innovation isn’t just about clean water—it’s a catalyst for broader positive change. We partner with other enterprises to distribute products like improved cookstoves. These are enhancing the health and well-being of communities, especially women and children. By addressing multiple needs, we amplify our impact and improve overall quality of life.

  • Carbon Credits for a Greener Future

We are not just providing clean water; we’re also pioneers in environmental stewardship. Through carbon projects and gold-standard carbon credits, we’re not only reducing carbon emissions but also empowering communities with limited resources to access life-changing products. This unique combination of social and environmental initiatives sets us apart as true agents of change.

  • A Source of Hope

The Purifaaya isn’t just a product; it’s a beacon of hope for communities that have long struggled with water-related challenges. This product is a reminder that innovative thinking can bridge gaps and transform lives, ensuring that the basic right to clean water is fulfilled for all.
